Variable Interval Schedule

An intermittent schedule of reinforcement that delivers reinforcement for the first response that occurs after an unpredictable amount of time has elapsed, with a varied requirement that changes around a predetermined average. For example, a customer might receive a discount after intervals of 2, 5, or 8 days, which averages to one discount after five days have elapsed (VI 5-day) (Cooper et al., 2020).
